Italy has recognised the potential of hydrogen as a renewable energy source. In 2016, it was officially classified as such by the enactment of the Italian Legislative Decree No. 257. The Italian government is actively promoting hydrogen adoption, aiming for an ecological transition. As part of its commitment, Italy has set ambitious targets for hydrogen development and application by 2030.

The Ministry of Economic Development estimates that investments of up to €10 billion will be necessary between 2020 and 2030 to establish a low-carbon hydrogen economy in Italy.

By 2050, hydrogen could potentially constitute almost a quarter of Italy’s overall energy demand. Currently, Italy has two operational hydrogen stations, one in Bolzano and another near Venice.

However, the Italian government has ambitious plans to expand this infrastructure. It aims to fund the establishment of 36 new hydrogen-fuelling stations across the country, making Italy the second-largest hydrogen station network in Europe after Germany.

Italy’s National Plan for Recovery and Resilience allocates resources for research, testing, production, and use of hydrogen. However, balancing hydrogen investments with other technologies to reduce CO2 emissions is crucial
